Penang – MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun urged the Umno leaders to take disciplinary action against PJ Utara Umno deputy chief Mohamed Azli Mohemed Saad, as his statement had threatened racial harmony.
She said Mohamed Azli’s statement was utterly wrong as the learning of mother tongue is the right bestowed upon each and every citizen by the Constitution, different races should respect each other.
“We have achieved independence for 57 years, all along the Chinese schools are there and there is no problem.”
Chew Mei Fun said this at a press conference in George Town today after attending a goods and services tax (GST) seminar.
She believed the statement was not representative of Umno leaders but was only representing the view of a small group of extremists.
“If Umno do not take disciplinary action, people might think that this is the stance of the Umno.”
Safeguards the right to learn mother tongue
Chew Mei Fun said multi-culture is always our strength, the Tourism Ministry had used “Malaysia Truly Asia” as the tourism slogan as it also recognized that this is the characteristic of Malaysia.
She said Malaysia hopes to achieve US$160 billion (about RM521.3 billion) bilateral trade with China by 2017, therefore we should maintain the multi-lingua feature which is our strength.
Chew Mei Fun said MCA welcomes other races to learn Chinese, but it would also be safeguarding the right to learn mother tongue without any hesitation.
