Kuala Lumpur, July 18 – PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang said PAS had planned for the implementation of Shariah criminal law since 1957, at the moment the party would hold meetings with all the Islamic non-governmental organisations in its effort to prepare for the implementation of hudud.

He said in a press conference after attending the briefing held by Islamic NGOs that PAS would also negotiate with DAP. DAP has got the right to oppose hudud, but it has no right to stop hudud from implementation.

During the briefing session, he said non-Muslims all the while had misunderstood the Shariah criminal law; in fact hudud was aimed at educating the public in order to deter them committing crime. Under hudud, the whipping punishment would not cause human body to be disabled which was different from the whipping in prison.

He said earlier on PAS was invited to attend a hudud briefing session in Singapore; however, the participants were only interested in political issues, throughout the whole session there were only two questions on hudud from the floor.

Hadi Awang reiterated that the private member’s bill tabled by him in the Parliament was only sought to amend Act 355 and would not be affecting non-Muslims; on the contrary, the non-Muslims had contradicted the Constitution by opposing the bill.
