(Kuala Lumpur 18 July) Following disclosure by Perak Chinese Schools Committees Association (Dong Lian Hui) chairman Datuk Lee Kon Yin that some Chinese primary schools in the states receive notices that the state education department would be sending religious teachers to teach in Chinese primary schools on a one on one swap basis, deputy education minister Chong Sin Woon responded that the one on one swap arrangement is not true.

After chairing MCA youth central committee meeting this afternoon, he convinced the Chinese primary schools nationwide that the religious teachers sent by education department are additional teachers to guide Muslim pupils in Chinese primary schools on religious classes. The move would not affect the number of Chinese primary school teachers.

“After being notified last night, I have requested for school inspectors in Perak to investigate. I have also checked with the human resources unit of Education Ministry that additional teachers are sent to Chinese primary school to teach religious lessons. This definitely would not affect the number of teachers in Chinese primary schools.”

Chong adds that this measure does not only apply to Chinese primary schools in Perak but throughout the country. The mode of one-on-one swap of teachers does not exist.

Lee has revealed that recently education department officials notified some Chinese primary schools that religious teachers would be assigned to teach in Chinese primary schools and there is worried that the number of Chinese teachers in schools would be reduced.

He reminded that the matter occurred in Perak recently and at least one to two Chinese primary schools face such problems.

On teachers’ training class conducted during school holidays, Chong said the Education Ministry would be giving priority to temporary teachers in its recruitment before opening up to others.
