Hudud law causes uproar again.

This time PAS President Hadi Awang used a different tactic by conspiring with UMNO from inside and outside to pave their way to table the hudud law in Parliament. They nearly made it and the action stupefied MCA and Gerakan.

The leaders of the four non-Muslim component parties of Barisan Nasional held a joint press conference protesting against UMNO in allowing to table the Private Member’s Bill and they urged the Rakyat to come forward to defend our Federal Constitution.

MCA President Liow Tong Lai stressed: “I don’t mind resigning all my government posts because our bottom line is we cannot accept the hudud law (Islamic punishment Act). I will never compromise and I am going all out to safeguard moderate governance and secular state as it is my responsibility.”

Hence MCA will call the citizens to resist the “hudud” law and it is possible that they may cooperate with the Opposition to fight for this cause.

Need to cut down own injuries

I will not say more than is needed about the development of it.

Have you heard before the story of Sisyphus? It is a tragic story in the Greek mythology. He was punished by Zeus. Sisyphus had to eternally push a big boulder uphill. Every time when he almost reached the top of the hill, the boulder would roll off the slope and crashed on him and he had to start all over again.

Whenever the hudud issue was raised, MCA and Gerakan would be tired out. Needless to say they have to threaten to resign from all their government posts, call the Rakyat to protest and also threaten to leave Barisan Nasional! Chinese community (whether it’s MCA, Gerakan or DAP) are just like Sisyphus. The governing system is like the mountain whereas the big boulder is liken to the Islamic hudud law. We are fated to push the big boulder uphill and are forever threatened by the boulder rolling down on us.

One wise Taiwanese scholar talked about how to avoid our fate like Sisyphus’.  Firstly we should start from the big boulder and estimate the weight of the boulder. In the process of pushing the boulder uphill, we must reduce our tiredness and minimize injury. When we almost reach the top, we must have a contingency plan before the big boulder roll over us so that we can minimize our injuries to save energy for the next round of pushing the boulder uphill again.

Passive defence

It seems that we always have to repeat Sisyphus’ tragic drama. We always have to passively fire-fighting until we find it very tiresome to overcome the attacks.

It was one huge messy affair. When Hadi Awang was allowed to table the “hudud law”, as component parties of BN how come MCA and Gerakan were totally not aware of it earlier?
