Kuala Lumpur, June 6 – The Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Hua Zong) Youth bureau urged all Barisan Nasional component parties to protest explicitly against Umno’s act to allow PAS’ private member’s Bill on the Shariah criminal law to be tabled in Parliament, and to demand for the resumption of negotiation culture, to immediately announce BN’s official stand on the hudud Bill.

Hua Zong Youth bureau pointed out that Umno had unilaterally allowed the hudud Bill to be tabled in Parliament without prior consent from other BN component parties, this showed that the spirit of internal consultation in BN had vanished; it is a fact that Umno had been practicing one-party dictatorship.

In a statement issued today, Hua Zong Youth bureau said in a democratic country, the Constitution must be non-religious, neutral and be secular, it should not be hijacked nor monopolized by a particular religion.

“Generally, there are two types of legal provision in our civil case, i.e. the Islamic civil law and the common law, this has created confusion among the legal fraternity and there is no proper solution in addressing the problem.”

Creates social controversy

The statement said although the proposed hudud would not involve non-Muslim, the indulgence in the expansion of Shariah law jurisdiction would only increase the grey area and create social controversy, triggering conflict and confrontation between religions.

In view of the plurality of our country, Hua Zong Youth bureau strongly opposed amendments to the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, and requesting Members of Parliament from both political divide to issue a statement on their stand to reject the Bill to amend the Shariah law.
