In my previous article, I predicted clearly that Barisan Nasional would win in the two by-elections because people had awakened. And true to what I said, BN won overwhelmingly in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections. The outcome showed the reality that there was a clear return of Chinese votes to BN.

Actually, it is the voice of the people, nothing magical about my prediction. When I was campaigning for BN with my Gerakan colleagues in Kuala Kangsar Chinese areas and Sungai Besar fishing villages, many Chinese voters privately told me that they were tired of DAP and Pakatan Harapan and they wanted to use their votes to teach DAP and DAP-supported Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) a lesson.

The local Chinese told me that DAP had been promoting the hate culture and their “red-beans” cyber troops had been smearing our national leaders. They won gloriously in the past when people gave them their votes but they know only how to promote the hate culture and did nothing for local development. The people believe that the immediate task ahead is to improve the national economy and not indulge in a war of words and promote the hate culture.

BN had been pragmatic and had won approval of the Chinese. Good examples included the rescue of Chinese fisherman jailed by the Indonesian authorities and announcement of a series of major projects in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar. People feel that BN is a reliable government.

When I did the walk-about in those areas, I found that the Chinese desire for a change was strong; they wanted to return to BN and did not want to support DAP. They see BN as a party which truly cares for the people. Some even told me they regretted for being cheated by DAP into voting for PAS in the 308 and 505 general elections.

The local Chinese told me the DAP had sweet-talked them into believing that there is no fear of the hudud if they did not commit any theft or robbery. Otherwise, they would not have supported PAS in the last two elections and made PAS so strong that they had now tabled the private hudud bill in parliament. They regretted listening to DAP and as a result, the country is being Islamized gradually.

They know that once the hudud bill is passed, all non-Muslims would be affected. In Brunei where the hudud has been enforced, open celebrations of non-Muslim festivals like the Lunar New Year and Christmas are not allowed. Even the freedom of non-Muslims to celebrate their traditional festivals has been taken away. Therefore, the Chinese wanted to use their votes to teach DAP a lesson. DAP did not take part in the by-elections, but because PAN is a splitter party of PAS, they also refused to support PAN.

The local Chinese told me that from what they learned from the media, they had been disappointed with DAP in turning the Penang state government into a mess. Therefore, they would not support any party linked to DAP, including PKR and PAN.

From the Teluk Intan by-election, the Sarawak state election and the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections, we can discern the obvious return of Chinese votes to BN. Without the strong Chinese support, BN would not have won such a brilliant victory.

My prediction is given the co-operation of BN component parties; it would not be a fantasy for BN to re-take Penang and Selangor in the upcoming general election. Thus, Penang BN component parties cannot afford to slacken. They should offer their best in serving the people in order to win their support. I believe, as long as we work hard in serving them, they can see it with their own eyes. I also believe a snap election can be held anytime and we should be well prepared for the challenges ahead. Winning back Penang and Selangor is only a matter of time!
