Poh Chin Chuan: Another option for students of Chinese independent schools with XMUM scholarships

Kuala Lumpur, Feb 24 – Secretary-general of the United Chinese School Committees’ Association (Dong Zong) Poh Chin Chuan said with the setting up of Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) campus and the “Chinese Ambassador Scholarship”, it is a timely assistance where students of the Chinese independent high schools would have another option for further study.
“Majority of the students will pursue their higher education either in Taiwan or in mainland China, now that the Xiamen University had set up its campus in Malaysia, it would help in reducing the economic burden of the students; the school authority should be commended for providing more scholarships.”
According to him, although XMUM had just begun to operate, Dong Zong administration department had been receiving enquiries from many students and parents on the enrollment in XMUM, Dong Zong also encouraged students to study in XMUM and provide them with information required. Students who intend to enroll in the university can pay a visit to the XMUM campus or to surf the website.
Poh Chin Chuan said in a telephone interview with China Press that XMUM could provide another option for the students from Chinese independent high schools, many students who wanted to pursue their further study in China could consider to study in XMUM; even though the courses provided by the university were not comprehensive in the initial stage, he believed that more courses would be introduced in the future.
Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Huang Huikang had announced yesterday that the Chinese embassy would set up “Chinese Ambassador Scholarships” in XMUM with ten scholarships to be awarded to outstanding students in the first year.
More courses will be introduced in the future
Poh Chin Chuan said Xiamen University is the famous university aspired by many students.
XMUM would facilitate those who intend to pursue higher education in China.
Meanwhile, Dong Zong president Lau Lee Ming welcomed the Xiamen University’s move to set up scholarships as XMUM had also accepted Unified Examination Certificate holders, it would definitely benefit Chinese independent high schools.
“In the past many countries had recognized UEC, now that XMUM campus had also recognized the certificate and provides various facilities for its holders, it is indeed good news to the students.”
He also hoped the government would recognize UEC, or else our talents would continue to be outflowed and this is very regrettable.
“Recently Dong Zong had met with Education Minister, the latter has promised to arrange for a tripartite dialogue together with Higher Education Minister to explore the feasibility of recognizing UEC, we hope the arrangement can be made as soon as possible.”
