President Najib extended an olive branch to PAS again during last week UMNO General Assembly. PAS did not turn down the offer. Instead PAS put up an ambiguous stand which made others ponder over its motive.

Since its establishment, PAS never hides their objective of forming an Islamic state by implementing the hudud law. As the objective of PAS did not have the support from voters of other faiths, its influence is localized more in Kelantan and Terengganu.

This objective received numerous verbal attacks from former DAP President the late Karpal Singh. During his lifetime he used to utter this popular remark: “To set up an Islamic state, over my dead body first”.

After the 308 general election, the political strength of Barisan Nasional has clearly weakened. The Opposition which consisted of PKR, DAP and PAS formed the Pakatan Rakyat. Even though they won less than half the parliamentary seats but they showed the potential means of taking over as the new government. UMNO the main component of Barisan Nasional always sent out signals to have negotiations with PAS. After the 505 general election, it was obvious that the dominating PAS faction was moving towards the ruling party UMNO.

No doubt Najib was in power but he had to face the internal threats and challenges from the former Prime Minister and his supporters. This time Najib extended his olive branch to PAS again was with the intention of strengthening his position despite touching the sensitivity of the Chinese community.

When PAS President Hadi forwarded the personal Private Bill to achieve the objective of PAS (implementing the hudud law), it was just like a gift dropped from the sky for MCA and Gerakan. They used this issue to bombard DAP which had robbed away their non-Muslim voters. Their leaders at all levels had a field day busy chastising DAP leaders on this issue. However they never admonished their Barisan Nasional main partner seriously not to dance to the tune of PAS.

All of them are still trying to evade responsibility

The non-Muslim communities used to have high vigilance on PAS. At present Najib is wooing PAS and the Chinese based component parties of Barisan Nasional tried to show the Rakyat the mistake committed by DAP. DAP was accused of helping PAS to regain its strength by “cheating” the Rakyat that PAS was only championing for a social state and hudud law was temporary kept aside.

When PAS forwarded the personal Private Bill to implement hudud law, DAP found itself in a position of being attacked by MCA and Gerakan. Now opportunity is given to DAP to counterattack when Najib extended his olive branch to PAS. DAP demanded MCA and Gerakan to state their stand to sever ties with UMNO.

MCA and Gerakan dare not warn their partner UMNO and Najib. Likewise DAP is also not responsible for the mistake they committed in encouraging the Rakyat to support PAS. Both DAP and the Chinese based parties in Barisan Nasional were trying to evade responsibility and the worries of the Rakyat resurfaced. In future, whom can we depend on?
