With thousand enrollments, number of students increased in Perak Chinese independent high schools
Oriental Daily, September 15, 2015
Ipoh, Sept 14 – Although the United Chinese School Committees’ Association (Dong Zong) fracas is still raging, it does not obstruct the parents from sending their children to study in Chinese independent high schools, about one thousand new students have enrolled at the seven Chinese independent high schools in Perak, the overwhelming response was even better than past years.
According to a survey conducted by the Oriental Daily, five out of nine Chinese independent high schools have introduced the entrance examination; they are Yuk Choy High School, Poi Lam High School, Shen Jai High School, San Min High School and Nan Hwa High School.
Even though San Min High School in Teluk Intan has yet to accept new intakes, while Nam Hwa High School in Manjung has recently been holding entrance exam at various Chinese primary schools, it is expected that the number of new students for this year will be increased once all the Chinese independent high schools open for enrollment.
Yuk Choy High School will accept all students enrolled
It is learnt that although the UPSR exam has just over, parents of the standard six students in Chinese primary schools have already enrolled their children for entrance exam for fear of not being able to enroll in the relevant Chinese independent high school.
The Chinese independent high schools interviewed said that they have been receiving many enquiries on the enrollment from parents although they have yet to start the Chinese primary schools and home visiting, the responses from the parents were quite encouraging. Hua Lian High School in Taiping and Pei Yuan High School in Kampar will not be holding entrance exam, they have already received the enrolment of 70 and 40 new intakes respectively.
Poi Lam High School and Shen Jai High School will hold entrance exam due to demand outstrips supply and also limited number of places.
Yuk Choy High School principal Soh Mun Sing told Oriental Daily that the enrollment for entrance exam had exceeded 200 one week ago, all of them came by themselves, the respond was encouraging just like past years.
“New students will be arranged to study in one remove class and five form one classes with 40 students in one class, our school will not eliminate any new student enrolled, only those with poor entrance exam result will be send to remove class,” he added.
Taiping Hua Lian received 70 enrollments
He said although there were eight new classes opened up in 2015, due to limitation of facilities and classrooms, next year there will be fewer new classes open up, the construction of new school building was still in progress.
Besides, the school authority will be visiting Cameron Highlands, Gua Musang, Tanjung Piandang, Nibong Tebal, Kuala Kurau and Parit Buntar to recruit new students.
Hua Lian High School principal Wu Ming Bing said the response from parents on the 2016 enrollment was quite encouraging, they have received 70 new intakes though the school has yet to open up for new registration.
“The school aims to have 240 intakes in 2016 and will not set up remove class, students with an average of 70% in school exam result and with grade A in conduct will only be accepted,” he added.
