Shouldn’t be requested of change in lifestyle, says a lawyer on Facebook when discussing the drink urine issue

(Selangor, Petaling Jaya 23 June 2015) In the case of non-Muslim students instructed to drink water in toilet, a liberal local lawyer Azhar Harun has posted on his Facebook asking why do non-Muslims have to change their lifestyles to accommodate Muslims.

He also posted a photograph of a photo frame with words of Allah and Prophet Muhammad and a chair, saying that that is the corner at home where his daughter has her tuition. The tuition teacher is a pious Christian but has never requested to change place or cover up the photo frame with sarong whenever he tutors.

“Does he complain that I am trying to convert him?”

“Or the name of Allah and Prophet Muhammad has resulted in him lost in his own faith?”

He said the tuition teacher has never touched on requiring them to respect other faiths or insult other religion.

Azhar Harun also raised some questions like why do Muslims in Malaysia request to be respected in fasting month. Why canteens have to be closed during fasting month? Why non-Muslim students are requested to drink water behind the door or in toilet?

He said regardless of whether asking non-Muslim students to drink urine is a joke, the highlight is why must non-Muslims change their lifestyle to accommodate Muslims?

He also counter-asked:” If there is need to accommodate Muslims, why not ask the non-Malays not to be so hardworking so that the Malays can score better results in examinations?

“Requesting them to respect our incapability so that we can achieve better results? Or ask them not to be so hard working then they would not make more money than us.”

He has termed such phenomenon as “self-pity” and said this is most regrettable.

The posting received more than 20,000 likes in few hours and more than 9,000 shares. Many netizens commented that they agreed with Azhar Harun. Some netizens expressed that mutual understanding is lacking among the various ethnic groups in our country. Some open-minded netizens praised Azhar’s open-mindedness and said Malaysia needs more liberal Muslims like him.
