Kuala Lumpur, June 15 – Malaysia Foodstuff Import and Export Association president Datuk Alex Chuah Poh Kiang urged the government not to raise the highway toll rates, instead it should review the concession agreements lest they would increase the burden of the business sector and the public.

He said with the high rate of highway utilization, any increases in the toll rates will increase the burden of the businesses and the people; this has contradicted the human centric concept advocated by the government.

“The government has urged the businesses not to raise the price of goods indiscriminately and has used the Anti-Profiteering Act to contain the traders, why then the government allowed the increase in toll rates?” he said in a statement issued today.

Chuah Poh Kiang said the business sector was pressured by the rising cost; the selling price will be higher when the purchasing cost is higher, but when they sold the goods at a higher price they would be harassed by the government and the government had not helped in reducing the costs pressure faced by the businesses.

He said toll hike would definitely affect the commodity cost especially with the escalation of transportation cost the price of some goods would inevitably be affected.

He called on the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers to be compassionate with the plight of the business sector and the public and not to allow the toll rate to be increased.

“The Federal government must seriously look into this problem or else people would become more and more disgruntle, this is hardly conducive to the government,” he said.
