National Taiwan University in a race to recruit Chinese independent school students, written test waive and students are free to choose area of study
Sin Chew Daily, 28 May 2015
(Selangor, Petaling Jaya 27 May) Renowned National Taiwan University will be recruiting outstanding Malaysian students single-handedly in July. It will be offering five seats to top Chinese independent school students recommended by the school without written tests. Students are free to choose the area of study.
The Federation of Alumni Associations of Taiwan Universities, Malaysia deputy president Chen Zhi Guang, who is the president of Alumni of National Taiwan University and Alumni of National Taiwan University deputy president Tan Shao Ju received the good news when having a dialogue with National Taiwan University.
The division head of academic affairs of National Taiwan University Guo Hong Ji, when asked, said the university needs international vision and to expand the international horizon of students. This is the reason for the university to go on recruitment drive on its own. This would also be giving some form of pressure to other countries which are also competing to source for top students from Malaysia.
“Top students from Chinese independent schools normally are target of recruits by universities in Singapore, Hong Kong and western countries. We hope through this monopoly method we would manage to “grab” some of the students to study in National Taiwan University.”
List to be recommended by principle and teachers
Head of registrar of National Taiwan University Hong Tai Xiong reveals that the name list of candidates would be recommended by principal and teachers. Apart from excellent academic results in all subjects, this would also include students who are outstanding in certain subjects or sectors.
“Under current recruitment system, if a student has an outstanding performance in a particular field while other subjects are of average, he may not be recruited by top universities based on his result. We hope to recruit such students.”
A delegation sent to visit five Chinese independent schools to source for name list
This is the first time National Taiwan University is going solo to recruit Malaysian students. The university would send a team to visit five Chinese independent schools to obtain a name list of outstanding students. For recruitment in this year, a total of 10 seats are allocated while five of them are reserved for Chinese independent school students to apply in their capacity as overseas Chinese while the reserved seats would not affect the existing joint recruitment of foreign students. The remaining five seats are additional seats offered by National Taiwan University.
Currently there are three ways for Malaysian students to apply to National Taiwan University. One of them is through a joint recruitment drive. Malaysian students can also apply in their own capacity as an international student or an individual student. This time the solo recruitment by National Taiwan University is the fourth channel.
Recruit outstanding students to further studies in Taiwan
In the past Chinese independent school students from Malaysia responded to the joint recruitment drive by applying with Unified Examination Certificate. They are to name the universities and the area of study pending allocation based on academic results. In recent years many top universities in Taiwan are out to recruit Malaysian top students with solo recruitment.
When the delegation of Federation of Alumni Associations of Taiwan Universities, Malaysia paid a visit to National Taiwan University, the head of academic affairs Zhuang Rong Hui, International Affairs head Zhang Shu Ying and Student Affairs head Cheng Cong Fu reveal in a briefing that the university would be adopting a solo recruitment to source for Malaysian top students. President of Federation of Alumni Associations of Taiwan, Malaysia Datuk Li Zi Song proposed the university to consider working with the alumni for them to assist in handling solo recruitment.
