Yeoh Soon Hin: Paya Terubong state constituency needs realignment as voters exceed 40,000
Guang Ming Daily, 30-09-14
Penang – It would be another 3 years before the next general election, the SPR has started to have dialogues in every state nationwide for the preparation of the re-delineation of electoral constituencies. Paya Terubong has the highest population among the 40 Penang State constituencies, the current voters population has exceeded 40,000, the State Assemblyman Yeoh Soon Hin feels that by looking at the vast population and comparing with other state constituencies, it has seriously overburdened an assemblyman and the constituency funds allocation and, thus, contradicting the ‘one man one vote’ principle.
Yeoh Soon Hin said the last delineation of electoral constituencies was done in 2002, and it has been 12 years since. With the vast increasing of housing units in Paya Terubong area and the population ratio increasing through the years, the SPR needs to restructure the delineation of the electoral constituency of Paya Terubong.
“As of June this year, Paya Terubong electoral constituency voters have reached 45,190, and that does not include those locals that have not registered. Compared with the Putrajaya parliamentary constituency which has about 10,000 voters to vote for 1 Member of Parliament to Paya Terubong having 40,000 voters to vote for 1 State Assemblyperson, this has clearly violated the ‘1 man 1 vote’ principle.”
He said, when comparing with other Penang State electoral constituencies, like Air Itam state constituency which has only 13,000 voters, the Paya Terubong state constituency voters can be 3 Air Itam state constituency, the voters difference is far too big.
