KUALA LUMPUR – The Annual Selection of Chinese Character for year 2014 has officially begun. Members of public are encouraged to nominate one Chinese character to represent the political and socio economic development of Malaysia. The event is promoted by Hua Zong (the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia) and organised by the Han Cultural Centre of Malaysia.

Hua Zong president Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah said the selection is also open to non-Chinese. Apart from strengthening and promoting the usage and awareness of the Chinese Han characters and language with over 6,000 years of history, it is most important to identify a symbolic Chinese character to reflect the key events, experiences, fortune and signs our country encountered this year, as well as summarizing the general situation of the country. The annual selection aims to demonstrate the uniqueness of Chinese characters by reflecting the country’s situation.

He said the organiser is making improvements in promoting the annual selection based on their experience from last year. Similar to the year before, the organiser is ensuring the annual selection is reaching out to more layers of the society.

“This is why we want to be more systematic and complete, including launching a more vibrant and diversified nomination mechanism to attract more people to participate.”

Pheng said so at the press conference of the Annual Selection of Chinese Character for year 2014. Also present at the event were Hua Zong secretary general Dr Chua Yee-Yen, deputy secretary-general Dato Chin Yew Sing, Annual Selection of Chinese Character 2014 working committee chairman Datuk Dr Goh Hin San, vice chairman Datin Jade Lee, Tan Choon Hock, advisor Wang Ya (translated name), secretary Law See Yok and planning chief Mini Goh.

Pheng Yin Huah said the series of “Chinese Han character fest” will be held to promote the annual selection, these events will feature Han character themed celebration activities including Chinese calligraphy and talks.
